How to Tell If Weed Is Moldy (and How Lab Tests Keep THCA Flower Clean)
In this article

Quick answer: Moldy weed usually has fuzzy white, gray or green patches, a musty smell like damp basement or hay, and feels spongy or damp. Healthy trichomes look like tiny shiny crystals with stalks. If you see fuzz or smell must, don’t smoke it.

Mold is the most common quality problem with cannabis flower, and it’s easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for. Here’s how to spot it, how to tell it apart from trichomes, and how lab testing shows a batch is clean before it ships.

What moldy weed looks and smells like

  • Fuzz or webbing. Thin white or gray hairs that look like cobwebs, often deep inside the bud.
  • Spots. White powdery patches (powdery mildew), or gray, brown or black spots.
  • Bud rot. A bud that’s brown and mushy in the middle while the outside looks fine. Break a few buds open to check.
  • Smell. Musty, sour, wet hay or mildew. Good flower smells like its terpenes: fruit, gas, pine, spice.
  • Feel. Spongy, damp or unusually heavy buds. Cured flower should snap or crumble a little.

Mold vs trichomes: how to tell them apart

Frosty flower is covered in trichomes, the resin glands that hold THCA and terpenes. New buyers sometimes mistake them for mold. Use a phone camera zoom or a cheap jeweler’s loupe:

Is it safe to smoke moldy weed?

No. Don’t smoke flower you think is moldy, and don’t try to save part of a moldy bud. Smoking mold can irritate your throat and lungs, and some people react to it more than others. You can’t wash mold off or heat it away. When in doubt, throw it out and contact the seller.

Is THCA flower safe to smoke?

Clean THCA flower is the same plant material as any cannabis flower. Like all smoke, it isn’t risk-free, but a full lab panel tells you the flower itself is clean. A complete COA checks for:

  • Microbials: mold, yeast and bacteria counts.
  • Mycotoxins: toxins some molds leave behind.
  • Pesticides: residues from growing.
  • Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury.
  • Potency: THCA %, delta-9 THC and total THC.

How to read a THCA COA

A certificate of analysis (COA) is the lab report for one batch. Here’s what to check, top to bottom:

  1. Lab name and accreditation. It should be a third-party lab, not the seller.
  2. Product and batch. The strain name should match what you’re buying.
  3. THCA %. The number the product is sold on.
  4. Delta-9 THC and total THC. These show how the batch measures against hemp rules.
  5. Safety panels. Look for “Pass” on microbials, mycotoxins, pesticides and heavy metals, when they’re included.

Every HIGH THCA product page shows the lab-tested THCA % and links its COA. You can also browse every report on our certificate of analysis page.

How to keep flower from molding

  • Store it airtight in glass, in a cool, dark place.
  • Keep humidity around 58 to 62 percent. Humidity packs make this easy.
  • Don’t store flower in the fridge or anywhere damp.
  • Check big bags every couple of weeks, especially in humid weather.

Moldy weed FAQ

Can you wash mold off weed?

No. Washing doesn’t remove mold spores from inside the bud, and it adds moisture that helps mold grow.

Does a COA test for mold?

A full-panel COA includes microbial testing for mold and yeast. Some potency-only reports don’t, so check which panels are listed.

What should I do if my order looks moldy?

Don’t smoke it. Take clear photos and contact us through our contact page.

Can old weed get moldy?

Old, dry weed rarely molds. Mold needs moisture. Flower stored too wet, or in a damp place, is the main risk.
