Quick answer: Stored airtight in a cool, dark place at 58 to 62 percent humidity, THCA flower stays fresh for about 6 months to a year. In a plastic bag on a sunny counter, it can dry out and lose its smell in a few weeks.
Flower doesn’t go bad like food, but it does fade. Terpenes evaporate, buds dry out, and THCA slowly breaks down with heat and light. Good storage keeps it tasting the way it did the day it arrived.
How long does THCA flower last?
| Storage | Stays at its best for |
|---|---|
| Glass jar + humidity pack, cool and dark | 6 to 12 months |
| Sealed original bag, cool and dark | 2 to 6 months |
| Opened plastic bag, room temperature | A few weeks |
| In sunlight or a hot car | Days |
Old flower is still smokable if it isn’t moldy. It just tastes flat and burns harsh. If you’re not sure, see how to tell if weed is moldy.
The best way to store flower
- Airtight glass. Mason jars or UV-blocking glass jars. Glass doesn’t hold smell or static like plastic.
- Dark. Light breaks down THCA and terpenes. Use a cabinet, drawer or tinted jar.
- Cool. Room temperature or a little below. Heat dries flower and speeds up breakdown.
- Right size. Fill jars most of the way. Too much air in the jar dries flower faster.
- Not the fridge or freezer. Fridges are damp and freezers make trichomes brittle, so they snap off when you handle the bud.
Do humidity packs work?
Yes. Two-way humidity packs add or absorb moisture to hold a jar at a set level. For flower, 58 or 62 percent is the usual choice. 62 keeps buds a little softer, 58 a little crisper. Replace a pack when it turns hard.
How to rehydrate dry flower
- Humidity pack: the safest method. Seal it in a jar with the flower for a day or two.
- Citrus peel: a small piece of orange or lemon peel in the jar for a few hours. Remove it after, or it can cause mold.
- Avoid spraying water on buds or adding bread or lettuce. They add too much moisture too fast.
Storing QPs and pounds for a shop
Shops holding wholesale flower have the same goals at a bigger scale. Keep bulk bags sealed until you need them, store them in a cool, dark back room, and sell oldest stock first. Split pounds into jars or smaller bags for the counter so you’re not opening the bulk bag every day. Buy in amounts you’ll sell through in a few months. See THCA flower wholesale for every size from QP to pound, and our retailer’s guide for more on stocking.
How to keep the smell down
- Smell-proof bags with a zip seal and a carbon layer work well for travel and small amounts.
- Glass jars with good lids hold smell better than plastic tubs.
- Double up: a jar inside a smell-proof bag or a lockable box.
- In a room: open a window, run a fan or an air purifier, and avoid smoking near fabric, which holds smell.
THCA flower smells like any cannabis flower.
Storage FAQ
Can you freeze weed?
It’s not a good idea for flower you plan to smoke. Freezing makes trichomes brittle, and they break off when you handle the buds.
Does old weed lose THCA?
Slowly. Heat, light and air break THCA down over many months. Some of it turns into CBN. Good storage slows this way down.
Why does my flower get dry so fast?
Usually too much air in the container, a warm spot, or a bag that isn’t airtight. Move it to a glass jar with a humidity pack.
How should I store pre-rolls?
In their tubes or pack, in a cool, dark place. Pre-rolls dry out faster than whole buds because the flower is already ground.
