Quick answer: Live resin is a cannabis concentrate made from plants that are frozen right after harvest instead of being dried and cured. Freezing locks in the terpenes, so live resin tastes and smells much closer to the living plant than most other extracts.
Live resin shows up on menus as sauce, badder, carts and the “sauce” around THCA diamonds. The name confuses a lot of people because it sounds like rosin, and both get compared to distillate. This guide sorts out all three.
What is live resin?
Most concentrates start with flower that has been dried and cured for weeks. Drying is good for smoking, but it costs the plant a lot of its terpenes, the compounds behind smell and flavor. Live resin skips that step. The plants are cut and frozen within hours, then extracted while still frozen.
The result is a concentrate with a big, true-to-strain aroma. It’s usually glossy and wet, from runny sauce to whipped badder, and amber to golden in color.
How live resin is made
- Harvest and freeze. Whole plants or buds go straight into a freezer. This is called fresh frozen.
- Extract cold. A hydrocarbon solvent, usually butane or propane, runs through the frozen material in a closed-loop system and pulls out cannabinoids and terpenes.
- Purge. The solvent is removed with gentle heat and vacuum. A clean final product shows no meaningful solvent on its lab report.
- Finish. Depending on how it’s stirred and stored, the extract becomes sauce, badder, sugar or diamonds and sauce.
Live resin vs rosin
The names are close, but the methods are opposite. Rosin is solventless. It’s made by pressing flower or hash between heated plates and collecting the oil that comes out. Live rosin uses fresh-frozen material too, but presses ice water hash instead of using a solvent.
| Live resin | Rosin | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Solvent extraction of fresh-frozen plants | Heat and pressure, no solvent |
| Flavor | Strong, true-to-strain terpenes | Strong; live rosin is often the most flavorful |
| Texture | Sauce, badder, sugar, diamonds | Badder, jam, cold-cure |
| Cost to make | Moderate | Higher, because yields are lower |
| Best for | Flavor at a fair price | Buyers who want solventless |
Live resin vs distillate
Distillate goes the other direction. It’s refined until almost everything except one cannabinoid is gone, including the terpenes. That makes it very potent on paper but flat in flavor, so many distillate carts have terpenes added back later.
- Live resin keeps the plant’s own terpenes and minor compounds. Many people describe the experience as fuller.
- Distillate is clear, consistent and high in a single cannabinoid, with little natural flavor.
In vapes, this is the difference between a live resin cart and a standard distillate cart. Liquid diamonds are a third option. Our guide to THCA liquid diamonds explains how they compare.
THCA diamonds in live resin
Leave live resin sauce to sit and the THCA slowly separates and grows into crystals. Those crystals are THCA diamonds, and the terpene-rich liquid around them is the sauce. Together they’re sold as diamonds and sauce.
The diamonds are close to pure THCA, while the sauce carries the flavor. Our THCA Diamonds come this way, with a lab report on the product page.
How to use live resin
- Dab it with a rig or an e-rig at a low temperature to keep the flavor.
- Top a bowl of flower with a small amount.
- Vape it in a live resin cart or a concentrate pen.

Live resin FAQ
Is live resin stronger than distillate?
Distillate usually tests higher in a single cannabinoid. Live resin often tests a bit lower but keeps the terpenes, and many people prefer how it feels. Check the COA for actual numbers.
Is THCA live resin hemp?
THCA live resin made from hemp is tested for delta-9 THC like any hemp product. See our THCA legal guide for how federal and state rules apply.
How should I store live resin?
Keep it in its sealed jar in a cool, dark place. The fridge is fine for longer storage. Heat and light break down terpenes fastest.
Is live resin the same as liquid diamonds?
No. Liquid diamonds are THCA diamonds melted down and blended with terpenes, mostly for vapes. Live resin is a full-spectrum extract.
