Quick answer: Shake is the small pieces of flower that break off buds as they’re trimmed, packed and moved. It comes from the same plants as the buds and goes through the same lab testing, but it sells for less because it doesn’t look like whole buds.
If you’ve ever seen loose bits at the bottom of a bag, that’s shake. Sold on purpose and in bulk, it’s one of the best values in cannabis. It’s a favorite for rolling pre-rolls, making cannabutter and anything where looks don’t matter. Shop THCA shake by the pound.
What is shake?
Dried cannabis flower is fragile. Every time buds get trimmed, weighed, bagged or shipped, small pieces fall off. Those pieces collect at the bottom of bins and bags. Growers and distributors gather it and sell it as shake.
Good shake is mostly broken flower with some sugar leaf, plus kief, the trichome dust that falls off buds. Kief is the most potent part of the plant. Read more in what is hash, kief and bubble hash.
Shake vs trim vs bud
| Bud | Shake | Trim | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Whole, trimmed flowers | Broken pieces of flower | Leaves cut off during trimming |
| Potency | Full | Close to the same flower | Lower; mostly sugar leaf |
| Looks | Best | Loose | Leafy |
| Price | Highest | Lower | Lowest |
| Best use | Smoking, showing off | Pre-rolls, edibles, everyday | Edibles, extraction, tinctures |
Many products, including ours, are sold as “shake and trim”: a blend of both. Each one has a lab report, so you can see the THCA % before you buy.
Is shake weaker than bud?
Not by nature. Shake from a strong strain is still that strain. Two things can lower it: too much leaf mixed in, or shake that sat around and dried out. Fresh shake with a current COA can test close to the buds it came from.
The lab report is the honest answer. Look at the THCA % on the product page and open the COA linked next to it.
Best ways to use THCA shake
- Pre-rolls and joints. Shake is already broken up, so it rolls fast and burns evenly. Learn how in joint vs blunt vs pre-roll.
- Cannabutter and edibles. Looks don’t matter once it’s cooked. Follow our cannabutter recipe.
- Decarbing. THCA needs heat to change into THC for edibles. See how to decarb THCA flower.
- Everyday bowls. A cheaper daily smoke while you save the buds for later.
Why shops buy shake in bulk
Shake lets a shop offer a lower price point without lowering standards. Many stores use it for house-brand pre-rolls or a budget shelf. Buying shake by the pound gives the lowest cost per gram of any flower product. Browse THCA shake for every strain we carry, including our THCA Snowflake Shake.
Shake FAQ
Can you smoke shake?
Yes. Shake smokes like the flower it came from. Break up any larger pieces and remove stems.
Is shake good for edibles?
It’s one of the best uses for it. You get the same cannabinoids at a lower price, and nobody sees the bud.
What is snowflake shake?
Snowflake shake is shake mixed with extra kief or concentrate, which gives it a frosty look and usually a higher THCA %.
Is trim the same as shake?
No. Trim is the leaf cut off during trimming. Shake is broken flower. Trim is lower in potency.
