Does THCA Show Up on a Drug Test? Honest Answer

Learn About THCAOctober 20, 20264 min read

Quick answer: Yes, THCA will very likely show up on a drug test if you smoke or vape it. Heat turns THCA into THC, and standard drug tests look for THC or its main metabolite, THC-COOH. A drug test can’t tell whether that THC came from hemp or marijuana.

We get this question a lot, so here’s a straight answer. If you’re subject to drug testing for work, sports, probation or anything else, handle THCA flower exactly like regular cannabis.

Does THCA show up on a drug test?

Most drug tests don’t look for THCA directly. They look for what your body makes after it processes THC.

The problem is that THCA rarely stays THCA. When you light a joint or heat a vape, THCA loses a carboxyl group and becomes delta-9 THC. Your body then breaks that THC down just like THC from any cannabis.

So the test sees THC metabolites, not the product label. Learn more about that conversion in Does THCA Turn Into Delta-9 When Smoked?

What a THCA drug test actually looks for

There’s no special “THCA drug test.” Standard cannabis tests look for the same targets no matter what you used:

  • Urine tests look for THC-COOH, the main inactive metabolite of THC.
  • Saliva (oral fluid) tests look for THC itself.
  • Blood tests usually measure THC and its metabolites.
  • Hair tests look for THC or THC-COOH stored in the hair shaft.

Federal workplace guidelines use a 50 ng/mL screening cutoff for the urine metabolite and 15 ng/mL to confirm. For oral fluid, the cutoffs are 4 ng/mL to screen and 2 ng/mL to confirm. Private employers may use different cutoffs.

A confusing label you might see

Some drug-testing documents shorten the urine metabolite to “THCA,” for delta-9-THC-9-carboxylic acid. That is not the same as the THCA in hemp flower. It’s the breakdown product your body makes after using THC.

Will THCA make you fail a drug test?

If you smoke or vape THCA flower, pre-rolls, vapes or concentrates, you should expect to fail a standard cannabis test. That’s the honest answer.

The same goes for edibles made with decarbed flower, since decarbing turns THCA into THC. Our guide on how to decarb THCA flower explains that process.

Drug test risk by THCA product type

  • Flower and pre-rolls: smoking converts THCA to THC right away. Expect a positive result.
  • Vapes: vaping heats THCA enough to convert it. Expect a positive result.
  • Concentrates: these pack much more THCA into a small amount. Dabbing can deliver a lot of THC fast.
  • Homemade edibles: decarbed flower is mostly THC, so the risk is the same as smoking.

No THCA product is “drug test safe.” Any brand that claims otherwise isn’t being straight with you.

What about raw THCA?

Raw THCA is less clear. It hasn’t been heated, so much less of it becomes THC. But there’s very little research on raw THCA and drug tests.

Also, THCA flower always contains some delta-9 THC, and more forms as flower ages. So even raw use carries a real risk of a positive result. Don’t count on it to keep you clear.

“It’s hemp” won’t help

A drug test measures compounds, not where they came from. THC from legal hemp looks the same as THC from marijuana. Federal testing guidance even warns that some CBD products can cause a positive result because of THC content.

How long THC stays detectable by test type

Detection windows vary a lot from person to person. These are general ranges from published research and medical sources, not guarantees.

Test typeWhat it detectsTypical window
UrineTHC-COOHA few days after a single use; about a week or more with regular use; weeks to a month or longer with heavy daily use
SalivaTHCUsually up to about 24 hours; sometimes longer in frequent users
BloodTHC and metabolitesUsually hours; can be longer in frequent users
HairTHC or THC-COOHOften up to about 90 days for a standard 1.5-inch sample; use may not show for about a week

What affects your detection window

  • How often you use: this is the biggest factor. Daily users stay detectable far longer.
  • How much you use: stronger products and larger amounts extend the window.
  • Body fat: THC metabolites are stored in fat and released slowly.
  • Metabolism: everyone processes cannabinoids at a different rate.
  • The test’s cutoff: a lower cutoff can catch smaller amounts for longer.

Potency matters too. A high THCA percentage means more potential THC once heated. See What Is a High THCA Percentage? to understand the numbers.

Can you “pass” a drug test after using THCA?

We don’t recommend detox drinks, masking products or other tricks. Many don’t work, and some labs check samples for tampering.

The only reliable approach is simple. If you’re tested, or might be, don’t use THCA products. If you’ve already used them, time is the only thing that clears THC from your system.

If you take a prescription or have a medical question about testing, talk to your doctor or the testing program’s medical review officer.

THCA Drug Test FAQ

Does THCA show up on a drug test?

Yes, if you smoke, vape or decarb it. Heat converts THCA into THC, and standard tests look for THC or its metabolite.

Can a test tell hemp THC from marijuana THC?

No. Standard tests measure THC and its metabolites. They can’t tell whether the source was hemp or marijuana.

How long does THCA stay in your urine?

After heating, it’s processed like THC. Urine tests can often detect it for a few days after single use and for weeks with heavy daily use.

Is THCA legal even if it shows up on a test?

Legality and testing are separate issues. An employer can still act on a positive test. For the legal side, read Is THCA Legal?

Is THCA safer for drug tests than delta-9?

No. Smoked THCA becomes delta-9 THC, so the risk is about the same. See THCA vs Delta-9 for the full comparison.
